Which is better for internship opportunities: UCLA or Duke?

UCLA has the edge for internship opportunities overall because of its location in Los Angeles and the sheer volume of nearby employers students can access during the school year. Being in Westwood puts students close to entertainment, media, tech, healthcare, startups, consulting, and nonprofit organizations, which makes part-time and in-semester internships much more practical.

The biggest differentiator is proximity to employers. For fields like film, media, communications, public affairs, business-adjacent roles, biotech, and some areas of tech, UCLA students have a dense local market to tap into without needing to wait for summer.

Duke is excellent, but Durham offers a smaller immediate internship market. Students still get strong outcomes, especially through Duke’s reputation, alumni connections, and access to Research Triangle employers in tech, healthcare, public policy, and life sciences.

Networking access feels different at the two schools. Duke often offers a more intimate environment, which can make faculty access and alumni outreach feel more personal. UCLA’s advantage is scale: more local employers, more chances to gain experience during the academic year. If the question is simply which school gives the broader and more convenient path to internships across industries, UCLA is the stronger answer.
