Is UC Irvine or NYU better for finance careers?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UC Irvine and NYU, and I want to end up in finance after college.

I know both schools can lead to good jobs, but I’m trying to understand which one has a stronger path into finance careers overall, especially in terms of recruiting and alumni connections.

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access to the finance industry versus lower cost and a more traditional campus experience. NYU, especially through Stern, sits in New York City where investment banks, asset managers, and other finance firms recruit heavily and year-round. UC Irvine can still lead to finance roles, particularly in Southern California, but it does not have the same built-in proximity, alumni density, or on-campus recruiting pull in high finance that NYU has.

For finance careers overall, NYU has the stronger pipeline. Its alumni network in banking, private equity, asset management, and corporate finance is much deeper, and being in Manhattan makes networking, internships during the school year, and informational interviews far easier. That matters because finance recruiting often starts early, and students who can meet professionals regularly and intern part-time while in school have a real advantage.

UC Irvine is a solid option, especially if you are cost-conscious or want to work on the West Coast. It places students into corporate finance, accounting-related paths, consulting, and some banking roles, especially in Orange County, Los Angeles, and nearby markets. But compared with NYU, the path is usually less automatic and can require more self-driven networking, more travel for certain opportunities, and more hustle to break into the most competitive finance tracks.

One important detail is whether your NYU offer is for Stern or another division. If it is Stern, the finance advantage is especially clear because Stern is one of the most recognizable undergraduate brands in finance recruiting. If it is NYU outside Stern, NYU still has meaningful location and network benefits, but the gap narrows somewhat depending on your major and how easily you can access finance clubs, recruiting resources, and internships.

If the cost difference is manageable, NYU is the better choice for finance careers. If NYU would require taking on heavy debt, UC Irvine becomes much more compelling, because finance outcomes are not worth any price and Irvine can still get you where you want to go with strong grades, internships, and targeted networking.
