Carnegie Mellon vs Harvard for tech prestige: which is more respected by employers?

For software and CS recruiting, Carnegie Mellon usually has the sharper reputation within tech itself. Its School of Computer Science is one of the most recognized programs in the field, and many employers see CMU as a place that produces students with very strong technical training. Harvard carries enormous overall prestige and opens doors almost everywhere, but in tech, the reaction is often more “elite general brand” than “this is one of the core CS powerhouse schools.”

Harvard fits a somewhat different profile. For a student who wants top-tier access to tech but also wants the widest possible brand across industries, Harvard is extremely powerful. Employers in product, startups, quant, consulting, venture, and tech-adjacent leadership roles may respond especially strongly to the Harvard name, and it can carry unusual weight outside pure engineering circles. For CS jobs, though, Harvard’s advantage is less about being viewed as more technically prestigious than CMU and more about the sheer reach of the institution and its network.

If the question is narrowly “which school is more respected by employers for tech and CS,” I would give CMU the edge. If the question is “which name has broader prestige that still works very well in tech,” that is Harvard. For a student set on being seen first as a serious technical person, CMU has the more targeted signal.
