How does UT Austin admissions difficulty compare to Rice for an in-state Texas student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UT Austin can feel more unpredictable because admission depends heavily on major and Texas-specific policies, while Rice is more uniformly selective across applicants. For an in-state student, UT may offer a residency advantage on tuition and, in some cases, access through automatic admission rules, but that does not make entry into the most in-demand majors easy. Rice does not have that same public-university structure, so the bar is simply very high across the board.

In plain terms, Rice is usually harder to get into overall. It is a smaller private university with a very selective applicant pool, and there is no special admissions track for Texas residents that changes the basic level of competition. Strong grades and scores that might put someone in the conversation at UT still may not make them especially competitive at Rice.

UT Austin is trickier to judge because there are really two admissions questions: getting into the university and getting into your specific major. For a Texas student, especially one with a strong class rank, admission to UT itself can be more attainable than Rice.

So for building a realistic list, treat Rice as the tougher reach overall. Treat UT Austin as a reach or high target depending on your academic profile and, very importantly, the major you want. For an in-state Texas student, UT is not automatically easier in every form, but compared side by side, Rice is the more difficult admit in the broadest sense.
