Is USC or Columbia more fun as a college experience?

The biggest practical tradeoff is campus-centered school spirit versus city-centered variety. USC tends to have a more classic, socially cohesive college feel, with big athletics, tailgates, Greek life, and a warmer outdoor campus culture shaping student life. Columbia usually feels less like one unified campus scene and more like a student experience embedded in New York, where a lot of the “fun” happens through the city itself, smaller friend groups, clubs, and off-campus plans.

Day to day, USC is more likely to feel overtly social. There is a visible campus energy, especially around football, spring events, student organizations, and weekends. Students often talk about the ease of finding something happening nearby, whether that is a dorm event, club social, performance, or just people hanging out on campus because the weather and layout make that natural.

Columbia can be exciting, but in a different way. The upside is obvious: Manhattan gives you access to concerts, internships, restaurants, museums, comedy shows, and neighborhoods that most colleges cannot match. The downside is that the social scene can feel more self-directed and less automatic. Students often build their own version of fun rather than plugging into one dominant campus culture.

Socially, USC is usually seen as more spirited and extroverted. Columbia often has a more intense academic rhythm, and while students absolutely socialize, the tone can be more independent and less centered on school-wide traditions. That does not mean Columbia is dull, just that its fun is often more urban and fragmented than communal.

If the question is simply which school feels more fun as a college experience for most students, USC has the edge. It tends to deliver a more recognizable and lively day-to-day undergraduate social experience, while Columbia is better for someone whose idea of fun depends heavily on access to New York rather than on campus culture itself.
