Is USC or Harvard worth the cost for college if I can get into both?

I’m trying to understand how people think about value when two schools have very different prices. If I somehow got into both USC and Harvard, I’d want to know whether the extra cost of one really makes a difference in the long run.

I’m mostly thinking about whether the name, alumni network, and career opportunities justify the price compared with the other option.

Harvard is usually more worth the cost than USC if you are admitted to both, because Harvard often ends up cheaper for many families, and carries broader name recognition across industries and countries.

The first big differentiator is price itself. Harvard’s financial aid is famously generous and entirely need-based, while USC relies more on a mix of merit scholarships and need-based aid. That means for many middle-income families, Harvard can actually cost less out of pocket than USC, even though people assume the opposite. If your family would not qualify for much need-based aid and USC offered a major merit scholarship, then the math could flip, but absent that, Harvard often wins on value before you even get to prestige.

The second differentiator is the alumni network and brand reach. USC has a very loyal and active network, especially in Southern California and in fields like film, entertainment, business, and communications. Harvard’s network is less regional and more universally legible, which matters if you are unsure about industry, want national or international mobility, or may pursue graduate school, consulting, finance, policy, academia, or highly selective fellowships. In practice, Harvard’s name tends to open more doors across a wider range of settings.

The third differentiator is how much of the opportunity gap depends on your goals. USC can absolutely be worth it for students targeting areas where the school has unusual strength and connections, especially in Los Angeles-based industries. But if the question is pure long-term return on reputation, access, and flexibility, Harvard typically gives you more leverage per dollar, and often at a surprisingly comparable or lower net price.
