Is Williams or Stanford harder to get into overall?

Stanford is usually harder to get into overall. It draws a much larger global applicant pool, has extremely limited space relative to demand, and is one of the most selective universities in the country across almost every major and applicant category. Williams is also highly selective, but in broad admissions terms, Stanford is typically the tougher admit.

Part of the difference comes from who applies. Stanford attracts huge numbers of applicants interested in engineering, computer science, entrepreneurship, research, and name recognition across the world, so competition is intense in sheer volume as well as quality. Williams, while elite, is a small liberal arts college with a more self-selecting pool made up of students who actively want a residential, undergraduate-focused environment in a rural setting.

That said, for a student who truly fits the liberal arts college model, Williams can still feel every bit as hard in practice. Its class is very small, it looks for strong academic achievement and intellectual engagement, and it tends to value applicants who seem genuinely excited by close faculty interaction, discussion-based classes, and campus community. A student applying mostly because Williams is prestigious, but without a real match to that kind of experience, may be less compelling there than at a place where their interests align more naturally.

So if the question is simply overall selectivity, Stanford is the harder admit. If the question is how hard each one would be for a specific applicant, fit matters more at Williams than people sometimes assume, because the school is small and its identity is very distinct.
