Is Williams or Stanford generally considered more prestigious?

In broad public perception, Stanford is usually seen as more prestigious overall. Among students and the general public, Stanford usually carries the bigger brand.

Williams has very high prestige too, but in a different lane. It is often viewed as one of the most respected liberal arts colleges in the country, and people familiar with undergraduate education, selective college admissions, and academia tend to hold it in especially high regard. In those circles, Williams can be seen as every bit as elite, just less broadly famous.

For a student thinking about how others will react to the school’s name, Stanford tends to get the more immediate recognition. That matters most if you mean prestige as instant reputation with strangers, international audiences, or employers who do not follow higher education closely. Stanford’s scale, graduate schools, research presence, and cultural visibility all reinforce that.

Williams appeals to a different kind of student: someone who values being associated with a place that has a very strong reputation among people who know colleges well, even if the average person may know less about it. On Wall Street, in certain fellowship and graduate school circles, and among academics, Williams is extremely respected. But if the question is simply which school is more commonly considered prestigious by students, employers, and the public at large, Stanford is the clearer answer.
