Williams vs. Columbia for finance: which is better for breaking into the industry?

Columbia has the edge for finance. Its New York City location matters a lot for semester-time networking, coffee chats, internships during the school year, and easy access to firms that recruit heavily from campus.

The biggest concrete advantage is proximity to the industry. At Columbia, it is much easier to attend employer events, meet alumni in person, and take on part-time internships while classes are in session.

Williams, though, is not some distant second-tier option for finance. It has an unusually loyal and responsive alumni network, and on Wall Street that network is very real. For students who are proactive, Williams can open excellent doors, particularly because alumni often go out of their way to help fellow Ephs with introductions, interview prep, and referrals.

Another difference is scale and undergraduate focus. At Williams, you get a small liberal arts environment with close faculty relationships, strong writing and analytical training, and less competition for leadership roles in student organizations. That can make it easier to stand out. At Columbia, you get the energy and resources of a major research university, but you are also one of many highly ambitious students targeting the same firms.

For long-term opportunities, both schools can lead to top finance outcomes, but Columbia gives you the more direct runway into the industry from day one. Williams can absolutely get you there too, and in some circles its alumni loyalty is exceptional, but Columbia offers the more immediate recruiting infrastructure and day-to-day access that most finance-focused students find hard to beat.
