Georgia Tech or Caltech for physics: which is the better choice for an undergraduate physics major?

I’m trying to decide between Georgia Tech and Caltech for undergrad physics. I know both are strong schools, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally better for physics as a major, especially for someone who may want research experience and a strong path toward grad school.

I’m mostly looking for a clear comparison of the physics program and overall academic environment for a physics student.

Caltech is the stronger undergraduate choice for physics. Its physics department is one of the defining centers of the institute, undergrads are deeply woven into research culture early, and the whole academic environment is built around small, intense STEM cohorts with very close faculty access.

Georgia Tech is rigorous as well, but it is larger, broader, and often feels more professionally oriented toward engineering and technology fields rather than centered on pure physics in the same way.

For a student specifically prioritizing undergraduate physics, research immersion, and preparation for top graduate study in physics, Caltech has the clearer edge.
