Is Georgetown or the University of Maryland better for DC internships?

For DC internships during the school year, Georgetown has the clearer edge in day to day access. It is in Washington, DC, its academic calendar and campus culture are deeply tied to internships in government, policy, nonprofits, media, and international affairs, and many students intern part time during the semester because the logistics are manageable. Maryland can absolutely get students into DC internships too, but it usually takes more planning and a more deliberate commute strategy.

Georgetown fits the student who wants internships woven into normal weekly life. If you can picture leaving class and heading to Capitol Hill, a think tank, a nonprofit office, or an embassy without building your whole day around transportation, Georgetown makes that much easier. That convenience matters more than people sometimes realize, because students are more likely to sustain a semester internship when getting there does not require a long train ride plus campus transit on both ends.

Maryland works well for a student who likes having access to DC but does not need it to feel constant or effortless. College Park is close enough that internships in the city are realistic, especially for students who stack classes strategically, use Metro or commuter rail, and are intentional about applying early. A lot of Maryland students intern in DC, particularly in government, public policy, journalism, and business-adjacent roles, but the experience tends to feel more like commuting into the city than being embedded in it.

Another difference is how each school’s network shows up. Georgetown has a very visible DC-facing alumni and employer pipeline, especially in politics, foreign service, public policy, law-related work, and advocacy. Maryland’s network is broad and strong too, especially because of its size and its connections across the region, but the internship culture is a little less centered on DC as the default hub of student life.

For summer internships, the gap narrows because both schools place students in DC and many students stay in the area. For semester internships, Georgetown is more convenient and often more seamless. If internship access is one of your top decision factors and you want it to feel easy rather than possible, Georgetown has the advantage.
