Northwestern or Columbia for consulting careers?

The biggest practical tradeoff is pipeline versus environment: Columbia gives you unmatched access to firms because you are in New York and can network constantly during the semester, while Northwestern gives you a very structured, campus-centered recruiting culture that is especially strong for consulting and business-adjacent paths. Both schools can place students into top consulting firms, but the experience can feel quite different. At Columbia, proximity creates volume and convenience; at Northwestern, the recruiting ecosystem is often more centralized and easier to plug into as an undergrad.

For consulting specifically, Northwestern has a long-standing reputation for sending a lot of students into the field. Firms know the school well, student consulting clubs are prominent, and Kellogg’s presence helps reinforce the business and strategy culture even for undergraduates. That does not mean Kellogg resources automatically flow to every undergrad, but the broader consulting brand around Northwestern is real and tends to help create a strong peer pipeline.

Columbia is also excellent, especially if you want to build your own network aggressively. Being in Manhattan matters for coffee chats, info sessions, internships during the school year, and alumni access across consulting and finance. The tradeoff is that Columbia can feel more self-directed and more diffuse, since students are competing for many different paths at once, including finance, tech, research, and grad-school tracks.

If consulting is one of several interests and you value being in NYC, Columbia is very compelling. If consulting is a central goal and you want the more reliable undergraduate pipeline, I’d lean Northwestern.
