Is MIT worth choosing over UC Berkeley for engineering or computer science?

I’m trying to decide between MIT and UC Berkeley and keep seeing people say MIT has the stronger brand, but Berkeley is also amazing, especially for engineering and CS.

I know both are top schools, so I’m mostly wondering whether the extra cost or distance to MIT actually leads to a meaningful advantage compared with Berkeley.

The biggest practical tradeoff is prestige density and undergraduate attention at MIT versus Berkeley’s lower cost and larger, more decentralized environment. For engineering and computer science, both schools open elite opportunities, but MIT tends to offer a more consistently undergraduate-focused experience, smaller classes earlier on, and a campus culture where science and engineering are the center of everything. Berkeley is outstanding too, especially in EECS, engineering, and access to Bay Area tech, but it is larger, more bureaucratic, and can feel less personal.

In terms of pure career outcomes, MIT does not create a huge enough advantage over Berkeley to justify any price difference for every student. Berkeley already places extremely well into top tech companies, startups, research labs, and graduate programs. In engineering and CS, Berkeley’s reputation is so strong that you are not giving up meaningful credibility by choosing it.

Where MIT can feel meaningfully different is the day-to-day academic experience and network. MIT often makes it easier to build close relationships with faculty, join hands-on research and maker culture early, and be surrounded by a student body that is unusually concentrated around technical problem-solving. That can matter a lot if you want an intensely collaborative STEM environment and are excited by things like UROP, hack culture, and the Institute’s very engineering-first identity.

Berkeley’s advantages are real, not secondary. The Bay Area location is a major plus for internships during the school year, startup exposure, and connections in software and engineering. Berkeley also offers tremendous breadth, and some students prefer being at a large public university with more academic variety and a less enclosed campus culture.

If Berkeley is substantially cheaper, especially in-state, it is very often the smarter choice. If the cost difference is manageable and you strongly want a smaller, more immersive undergraduate STEM environment, MIT is one of the few places where paying more can make sense.
