Is Carnegie Mellon or the University of Chicago more stressful for students?

Carnegie Mellon tends to feel more stressful for more students overall, mainly because the pressure is often built into the structure of the workload. At CMU, students in majors like computer science, engineering, design, drama, and architecture often face heavy project-based schedules, long lab or studio hours, and demanding weekly deadlines that can make stress feel constant. UChicago is absolutely intense too, but its stress more often comes from reading, discussion-heavy classes, and the pace of the Core rather than the same level of all-hours production culture across as many programs.

One big difference is how stress is distributed across majors. At CMU, certain colleges are known for very high time demands that spill into nights and weekends because assignments are cumulative and technical, not just exam-based. That can create a campus atmosphere where being overwhelmed feels normalized, especially in programs with strong preprofessional intensity.

At UChicago, the academic culture is serious, but it is often described as more intellectual than overtly grind-oriented in the same way. Students still work hard, especially early on because of the Core Curriculum, but the stress can feel more tied to tough ideas, close reading, and writing pressure than to nonstop deliverables. In day-to-day life, that usually makes the experience feel intense without always being as logistically packed.

Another difference is campus tone. CMU has a reputation for students being deep in their work and often talking openly about workload, which can amplify stress socially.

CMU has the edge, especially in its most demanding technical and studio programs. UChicago is still challenging, but for many students the pressure reads as rigorous and cerebral rather than relentlessly compressed.
