Is UT Austin or the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign better for data science?
I’m trying to decide between UT Austin and UIUC for data science and want to understand which one is generally stronger for this major. I’m mostly looking at things like the quality of the program, internship opportunities, and how well the degree is regarded for getting into data science jobs after college.
I know both schools are really good overall, so I’m trying to figure out which one tends to be the better choice specifically for data science.

The biggest tradeoff is program structure versus recruiting ecosystem: UIUC has a very established reputation in computing, statistics, and technical recruiting, while UT Austin gives you access to a booming Austin tech scene and a fast-rising data science environment tied closely to a top CS and math ecosystem. For pure data science career outcomes, both are excellent, but they get there a bit differently. UIUC often feels stronger on the depth of technical infrastructure around data, while UT can feel stronger on location-driven internship access during the school year.
