USC vs UCLA for communications: which is better for an undergrad major?

I’m trying to decide between USC and UCLA and I want to study communications in college. Both schools seem strong, but I’m having a hard time telling which one is the better fit for an undergrad comm major.

I’m mostly trying to understand the overall reputation and academic experience for communications at each school.

For undergraduate communications, USC tends to stand out more if you want a program that is directly centered on communication studies, media industries, and professional connection-building from the start. USC’s Annenberg School is one of the most visible communications schools in the country, and that matters for undergrads because the major is housed in a school with a very strong identity, alumni network, and close ties to Los Angeles media, entertainment, journalism, and strategic communication. UCLA is also excellent, but it is often a better match for students who want communications through a more theory-heavy, research-oriented, and broader public-university environment.

A student who wants a highly branded communications experience will usually find USC more aligned. Annenberg gives communications a clear institutional home, and USC is especially attractive for students interested in media, public relations, digital storytelling, entertainment communication, or industry-facing internships during the school year. The undergraduate experience there often feels more intentionally career-connected, and USC’s private-school structure can translate into smaller classes and somewhat easier access to professors, advising, and school-specific resources.

UCLA makes more sense for a student who wants communications in a larger, more academically sprawling setting and is comfortable being proactive in a huge university. UCLA’s Communication major has a strong intellectual reputation and can be especially appealing if you like social science approaches to media, interpersonal communication, political communication, or communication research. The campus offers immense breadth across departments, so it can be a strong place for someone who wants to combine communication with sociology, political science, psychology, film, or business-related interests.

In terms of reputation specifically for communications, USC usually has the edge in name recognition within the communications and media world because Annenberg is such a known entity. UCLA carries tremendous overall prestige, but for this particular field, USC’s program is often the one people think of first.
