For undergraduate research, is Harvard or MIT generally better?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out which schools would be a better fit if I want to do serious undergraduate research. I know both Harvard and MIT have strong academics, but I keep hearing different things about how easy it is to get involved in labs and research projects as an undergrad.

I’m trying to understand which school is generally better for a student who wants lots of research opportunities and support.

For undergraduate research specifically, MIT often feels more built around getting undergrads into hands-on projects early and often. Research is woven into the culture there, many faculty run large active labs that regularly include undergraduates, and MIT has well-known structures like UROP that make finding paid or credit-bearing research unusually straightforward. Harvard absolutely offers excellent undergraduate research too, but the path can feel a bit more decentralized and dependent on initiative, department, and mentor fit.

Harvard fits the student who wants top-tier research options but also values a broader university environment with stronger separation between disciplines. It can be especially appealing if your interests might cross science with public policy, economics, government, history of science, or the humanities, since Harvard’s overall academic breadth and affiliated hospitals, institutes, and centers create enormous possibilities. In the life sciences, medicine, and interdisciplinary work, Harvard’s network is exceptional, though undergrads sometimes have to be more proactive in navigating that scale.

A practical difference is how the opportunity is experienced. At MIT, the institution has a reputation for making undergraduate research visible, normalized, and administratively supported from the start. At Harvard, the opportunities are just as serious at the high end, but students often piece them together through individual departments, faculty outreach, and university advising rather than through one central identity.

So if your main question is ease of access and research-centered undergraduate culture, MIT usually comes out ahead. If you want equally high-level opportunities within a more broadly distributed university setting, especially one that supports cross-disciplinary exploration beyond STEM, Harvard can be just as compelling.
