Is UChicago or UC Berkeley better for computer science?

For computer science specifically, UC Berkeley has the stronger reputation, larger CS ecosystem, and deeper connection to the tech industry. If your main question is which school is more nationally recognized for CS itself, Berkeley is the clearer answer.

Berkeley tends to fit the student who wants a big, intense, highly technical environment where computer science is a major center of gravity on campus. There are more specialized courses, more peers deeply focused on CS, and more ways to plug into competitive research and industry pipelines early. That also means larger classes, more self-direction, and a culture that can feel fast-paced and demanding.

UChicago makes more sense for a student who wants computer science inside a more broadly intellectual, theory-friendly university culture. Its CS department has grown a lot and has real strengths, especially for students interested in mathematics, theory, interdisciplinary work, or combining CS with economics, statistics, or the social sciences. The Core Curriculum and overall academic style can be a real plus if you do not want your college experience to revolve narrowly around pre-professional tech culture.

The tradeoff is that UChicago is not viewed the same way Berkeley is in pure CS scale or industry footprint. You can absolutely succeed there in tech, but the CS community is smaller and the recruiting ecosystem is not as naturally built around the major.

So if you are evaluating them from a computer science perspective first, Berkeley carries more weight. If you are deciding what four years you actually want, UChicago is the more distinctive option for someone who values a deeply academic, interdisciplinary experience as much as the CS major itself.
