NYU or Duke: which has a better social life for undergrads?

The biggest practical tradeoff is built-in campus community versus city-based independence. Duke gives you a more traditional residential undergraduate social life, with a concentrated campus, school spirit, and a lot of social activity organized around where students live. NYU has plenty happening, but because it is spread through Manhattan and students socialize across dorms, neighborhoods, internships, and the city itself, the day-to-day experience can feel less automatically cohesive.

For ease of making friends, Duke is usually the simpler environment. Most undergrads live in a more self-contained campus setting, there is a strong sports culture, and student life tends to revolve around shared traditions, clubs, residence life, and weekend events that pull people together. If what you want is a place where friendships form naturally from seeing the same people often, Duke has a real advantage.

NYU can absolutely be social, but it often takes more initiative. Students have access to New York, which means concerts, restaurants, internships, nightlife, and endless off-campus options, but that also means people’s social lives can be more fragmented. Some students love that freedom because it feels exciting and adult, while others find it harder to get that classic "everyone is in this together" college feeling.

For a balanced college experience, Duke tends to deliver that more consistently for undergrads. It is easier to have academics, social life, campus events, and downtime all tied together in one place. NYU is often more fun for students who specifically want the energy of the city and are comfortable creating their own structure, but if your question is which school more reliably feels social and connected on a daily basis, Duke is the stronger answer.
