Is Tufts worth it compared with UC Berkeley for undergrad?

For most students, Tufts is only worth the extra cost over UC Berkeley if you strongly want a smaller, more undergraduate-centered environment and the price difference is manageable for your family. Berkeley usually offers broader academic scale, stronger overall public visibility, and exceptional opportunities across research, recruiting, and the Bay Area economy. Tufts stands out more for students who want easier access to professors, a tighter campus community, and a less overwhelming day-to-day experience.

Tufts tends to fit students who know they learn best in smaller classes and want a campus where undergrads are the clear focus. It has a more intimate feel, advising is often more personal, and it can be easier to build close relationships with faculty early. If you care about being seen as an individual rather than navigating a very large system, that difference is real, and for some students it is worth paying for.

Berkeley makes more sense for students who want maximum range and are comfortable being proactive. It has enormous academic depth, especially if your interests might shift, and it offers access to a huge alumni network, major research activity, and strong pipelines in fields like tech, engineering, business-adjacent work, policy, and science. The tradeoff is that Berkeley can feel bureaucratic and crowded, so you often have to advocate for yourself.

If you are considering majors where Berkeley has especially deep resources, the value case for Berkeley gets even stronger. If you are more focused on the liberal arts experience, interdisciplinary study, or a campus where community and access matter more than scale, Tufts becomes easier to justify.

The cost question matters a lot here.
