Is Boston University or Georgetown considered more prestigious for college admissions and resumes?

Georgetown is usually seen as the more prestigious name overall, especially in college admissions circles and on resumes tied to politics, international affairs, government, law, and certain East Coast professional networks. Boston University is very well respected, but it is more often viewed as a large, high-achieving research university than as a school with the same across-the-board brand signal.

One big differentiator is Georgetown’s institutional identity. Georgetown has a very distinct national reputation in fields like international relations, political science, diplomacy, and pre-law, and its Washington, DC location reinforces that image in a way employers and admissions readers immediately recognize. The school’s alumni presence in government, consulting, think tanks, and policy-adjacent work gives the name a particular kind of prestige that travels well.

Boston University’s strength looks different. BU has excellent programs, especially in communications, business, pre-med paths, engineering, and the arts, and it benefits from being in Boston, one of the best student cities in the country. On a resume, BU reads as rigorous and respected, but usually not with quite the same elite-name shorthand that Georgetown carries in many professional and academic settings.

Another factor is how each school is talked about socially and professionally. Georgetown tends to have more of a classic “top private university” aura, while BU is sometimes perceived as more expansive and less intimate because of its size and broad program mix. That does not make BU weaker academically, but it does affect how the two names land when someone is making a quick prestige judgment.

For pure prestige, Georgetown has the edge. BU is still a strong and credible name, just with a reputation built more on scale, program quality, and research than on the same concentrated prestige signal.
