Is RPI or Northeastern worth the cost for engineering or STEM students?
I’m a high school junior/senior trying to figure out whether either of these schools is actually worth the price tag. Both seem strong for STEM, but they’re also much more expensive than some of my other options.
I’m mostly trying to understand whether the outcomes and opportunities are strong enough to justify the cost compared with cheaper schools.

For most engineering or STEM students, Northeastern is easier to justify at a very high price than RPI, but neither is automatically worth full cost if you have a much cheaper solid option. Northeastern offers a broader mix of strong STEM academics, a very established co-op system, and location-driven access to employers in Boston. RPI is respected in engineering and technical fields, but the overall value question is harder because its network and student experience are narrower while the price can still be steep.

For a student who wants an intensely STEM-centered environment, that can be appealing. But Troy is a much smaller market than Boston, so day-to-day access to employers and internship ecosystems is not the same, and that affects how much the school’s high cost pays you back in opportunities.
Another practical difference is flexibility. Northeastern has stronger breadth across STEM plus non-STEM areas, so students who change direction, add business, policy, design, or interdisciplinary work often have more built-in options. RPI can be excellent for students who are already pretty certain they want a technical path and like a more concentrated academic culture.
The cost question really comes down to the gap. If Northeastern or RPI would require major debt and your cheaper option is a reputable public university or another solid engineering school, the premium is often hard to defend. If Northeastern is close enough in price to your alternatives, its co-op model can make the extra cost more understandable.
