Is Vassar or Middlebury better for study abroad opportunities?

Middlebury has the edge for study abroad. Its language focus and long-running global programs make it especially strong for students who want immersive experiences, and it is one of the few liberal arts colleges with its own well-known Schools Abroad in multiple countries and languages.

That matters because Middlebury’s abroad system is unusually integrated with the college itself. Instead of relying mostly on outside providers, many students use Middlebury-run programs designed to match the school’s academic standards, especially in language and area studies. If you want serious language immersion, Middlebury is hard to beat.

Vassar is still very good, especially if you want a broad menu of approved programs and more varied non-language options through external partners. It has solid advising and many students go abroad, but its model is less defined by institution-owned overseas programs. In practice, that often means more choice, but not quite the same signature infrastructure or identity around international study that Middlebury has.

On graduation requirements, both schools are capable of making study abroad work, but Middlebury stands out because abroad is so embedded in the academic culture. For a student prioritizing study abroad as a central part of college, that built-in structure is the clearest difference.
