Is MIT worth the extra cost compared with UCLA for an engineering student?

For engineering, MIT is only worth the extra cost if the price difference is manageable for your family without major debt. UCLA can already get you to top engineering jobs, research, and graduate programs, so a much higher bill for MIT is not automatically justified just by prestige.

One concrete difference is the academic environment. MIT is intensely centered on science and engineering, so the culture, course design, maker spaces, and student energy are all built around technical problem-solving in a very concentrated way. UCLA has excellent engineering too, but it sits inside a much broader university experience, which can feel less all-consuming and give you more flexibility across interests.

Another differentiator is access and scale. MIT’s smaller size often means a tighter engineering community, easier visibility with professors and labs, and a campus where technical students dominate the conversation. UCLA offers major research opportunities as well, especially through its engineering school and Los Angeles connections, but the university is much larger, so navigating classes, advising, and research can take more initiative.

Location changes the experience in practical ways. MIT puts you in Cambridge, next to a dense cluster of startups, labs, and engineering-driven employers in the Boston area. UCLA benefits from being in Los Angeles, which is especially useful for aerospace, tech, media-tech, and industry internships during the school year, often with a broader lifestyle and social environment than MIT.

The money question should carry real weight here. If MIT would require substantial loans or create family strain, UCLA is the smarter call because the engineering outcomes are still outstanding. If the extra cost is relatively affordable and you know you want the most immersive engineering-focused ecosystem possible, MIT offers something distinct enough to justify paying more.
