Is UCLA worth the extra cost compared with UC Merced for value?
I’m trying to decide between UCLA and UC Merced and keep hearing people talk about “value” as in whether the more expensive school is actually worth it. I know UCLA has a stronger reputation, but UC Merced would likely cost less for me.
I’m mainly trying to understand how people think about return on investment when comparing a higher-cost, higher-prestige school with a much cheaper option.

Yes, UCLA can be worth the extra cost, but only when the price difference is manageable for your family and you would actually use what UCLA offers. UCLA brings a far larger alumni network, broader recruiting across many industries, and more established academic departments and research opportunities. UC Merced can be the smarter value choice when the cost gap would mean significant debt, because paying much less for a UC degree can easily outweigh the prestige bump.
The student who gets the most from UCLA is someone who wants access to a dense ecosystem right away: big-name employers recruiting on campus, a huge range of majors and student organizations, and a campus brand that opens doors more quickly in some fields. That matters most in industries where network, location, and recognition carry real weight, such as entertainment, some business paths, consulting, and certain competitive research or graduate school pipelines. UCLA also has the advantage of being in Los Angeles, which makes internships during the school year much easier in many sectors.
UC Merced makes more sense for a student who is cost-sensitive, self-directed, and less interested in paying a premium for name recognition. Merced is smaller, newer, and still building its reputation, but that can mean more direct access to professors, less competition for some campus opportunities, and a lower financial burden after graduation. If choosing UCLA would require heavy loans, the return on investment gets weaker very quickly, especially if you are entering a field where starting salaries are modest or where graduate school is likely.
A practical way to frame it is this: compare the total four-year cost, not just yearly price, and ask what that difference buys you. If UCLA costs only somewhat more and your goals line up with its stronger network and opportunity base, the premium can be justified. If the gap is large enough to create meaningful debt, UC Merced often becomes the higher-value option because financial flexibility after college is part of ROI too.
