Choose UCLA if you want the safer and more versatile platform for an international business career. UCLA gives you a far larger U.S.-based alumni network, stronger name recognition with employers across many industries, and access to the Los Angeles market, which matters for internships in finance, consulting, media, tech, and global trade. It is also the more established option if you are not completely certain that you want your early career centered in China or East Asia.

The biggest difference is recruiting infrastructure. UCLA is a major public university with broad employer access in Southern California and a long track record of sending students into business-adjacent fields, even though it does not offer a traditional undergraduate business major in the same way some schools do. For international business, that matters because many students build the path through economics, business economics, accounting, data, language study, and internships rather than through a single named major.

NYU Shanghai stands out for immersion. If your goal is to build real fluency in cross-border work, especially involving China, Asia-Pacific markets, or multinational firms operating in that region, studying in Shanghai gives you something UCLA cannot replicate: daily exposure to an international student body and a business environment shaped by one of the world’s most important commercial hubs. That can be a real advantage for students who already know they want a globally mobile career and are excited by a newer, less conventional campus experience.

The tradeoff is predictability. UCLA offers the more traditional college environment, deeper campus ecosystem, and a brand that is easier for a wide range of employers to immediately understand. NYU Shanghai can be excellent, but it is more specialized in how its value plays out, and some of its upside depends on how intentionally you use the location, language opportunities, and cross-campus NYU system.

For most students comparing these two specifically for international business, UCLA is the stronger call because it keeps more doors open while still giving you plenty of ways to build global experience.
