Which is better for journalism, UCLA or Northwestern?

Northwestern is the stronger choice for journalism if that is your main goal. The biggest reason is Medill, which is one of the most established and nationally recognized journalism schools in the country, with a curriculum built specifically around reporting, writing, editing, multimedia, and professional newsroom training. UCLA is an excellent university, but it does not offer the same kind of dedicated undergraduate journalism school experience.

The academic structure is a major difference. At Northwestern, journalism is a full undergraduate pathway through Medill, so students get specialized advising, journalism-focused classes from early on, and a program designed around producing working reporters and media professionals. At UCLA, students interested in journalism usually approach it through related majors, campus media, and selective extracurricular opportunities rather than through a comparably centralized undergraduate journalism program.

Professional preparation is another clear separator. Northwestern has deep ties to major media organizations, strong internship pipelines, and a long track record of graduates entering journalism, magazine writing, digital media, broadcast, and investigative reporting. That kind of built-in industry network matters a lot when journalism is the career target, especially in a field where clips, mentorship, and placements carry real weight.

The student experience also tends to be more journalism-immersive at Northwestern. Because so many classmates, faculty, and alumni are directly connected to the field, the environment is more focused on newsroom culture and media careers from the start. UCLA can absolutely work for journalism, especially given its location and broad academic strengths, but if the question is which school is more widely regarded as better specifically for journalism training, Northwestern has the clearer edge.
