Caltech vs CMU for robotics: which is better for a college student interested in robotics?
I’m a high school junior looking at colleges with strong robotics programs, and these two keep coming up. Both seem impressive, but they have pretty different reputations and campus cultures.

For robotics specifically, Carnegie Mellon is the clearer standout for most students. In practical terms, a student who already knows they want robotics, especially applied or interdisciplinary robotics, will usually find more opportunities at CMU. A student who wants a very small, intense STEM college and may value elite training in fundamentals as much as robotics itself could reasonably prefer Caltech.
