Is Caltech or Williams better for science majors?

Caltech is the stronger pick for most students who want the most intense, specialized science education. Its entire academic culture is built around science and engineering, the curriculum goes deeper and faster, and undergraduates are surrounded by faculty, labs, and peers focused almost entirely on STEM.

The biggest difference is scale and concentration. At Caltech, science is not just one strong division within a broad college. It is the core identity of the institution. That means more advanced science coursework, easier access to highly technical classes across fields, and a campus environment where research, problem solving, and quantitative work shape everyday life.

Research access is another major separator. Caltech is a research university with major lab infrastructure and close ties to places like JPL, so undergraduates often have unusually direct exposure to serious scientific work. Williams does offer strong undergraduate research, especially because of its small classes and close faculty mentoring, but the overall volume and specialization of research opportunities are not at the same level as Caltech’s.

Williams stands out more in the classroom experience. It offers excellent science teaching, very small classes, and a liberal arts setting where professors are deeply focused on undergraduates. For a student who wants top-tier science training while also valuing broad exploration in the humanities and social sciences, Williams can be a very compelling option.

The day-to-day academic atmosphere is also quite different. Caltech tends to be more intense, more narrowly STEM-centered, and more self-selecting for students who truly want that environment. Williams gives you a serious science education too, but in a more balanced liberal arts context rather than a campus defined overwhelmingly by science.
