Is Caltech or Columbia better for pre med?

Columbia is the safer and more practical choice for most pre-med students. It gives you direct access to a major medical center through Columbia University Irving Medical Center, offers a much broader set of life science and humanities courses, and has a larger pre-health advising ecosystem built around students pursuing medicine. Those things matter because pre-med is not just about taking hard science classes. It is also about finding clinical exposure, research, advising, and room to build a strong GPA.

The biggest differentiator is clinical access. At Columbia, being in New York City and connected to a major academic medical system makes it much easier to find hospital volunteering, shadowing, patient-facing work, and public health opportunities during the school year. Caltech has excellent science, but it is a much smaller institute with a more limited campus ecosystem for clinical experiences, so pre-med students often have to be more intentional about finding those opportunities off campus.

The second differentiator is the academic environment. Caltech is famous for being intensely rigorous across the board, and its small size means fewer course options outside STEM and less flexibility if you want to shape a more traditional pre-med path. Columbia is certainly challenging too, but it has a larger curriculum, more departments, and more ways to balance demanding science courses with classes that support your writing, ethics, and social science preparation for medicine.

Advising and peer infrastructure also lean Columbia. Because more students there are pursuing medicine, the pre-health process is more established, from committee support to planning clinical, research, and service experiences over several years. At Caltech, you can absolutely reach med school from there, especially if you thrive in a deeply quantitative science setting, but it is a less common route and tends to suit a student who is excited by Caltech first and pre-med second.
