I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, and these two schools keep coming up when I think about computer science. UT Austin is much closer to home and feels more realistic, while MIT has the bigger name and a huge reputation in tech.

For opportunities after college, neither school closes doors. MIT may carry more weight internationally and in certain research-heavy or startup circles, but UT Austin is already a major target for tech recruiting and has a strong alumni network, especially in Texas and increasingly beyond it. In practice, a strong student at either school can do very well.
The more useful question is what environment will bring out your best work. A student who wants the most concentrated, high-pressure technical setting may find MIT worth the reach.
