UT Austin vs Vanderbilt admissions odds: which school is harder to get into?

For a typical strong applicant, Vanderbilt is usually harder to get into than UT Austin. Vanderbilt has a more uniformly selective applicant pool across the board, while UT Austin’s admissions odds vary a lot depending on whether you are in-state, your class rank, and the major or college you apply to. At UT Austin, some Texas students have a built-in admissions advantage through the state’s automatic admission policy, but that does not guarantee entry to the most competitive majors.

The student who feels Vanderbilt is realistic is usually one with a very high-end academic profile and a strong overall application, since there is no broad in-state boost and the bar is high across most of the university. Vanderbilt admissions also tend to be less predictable because nearly everyone applying is already academically well qualified.
