Is Cornell harder to get into than Penn State for undergraduate admissions?

The biggest practical difference is that Cornell is one of the most selective private universities in the country, while Penn State is a large public university with a much broader undergraduate intake. For overall undergraduate admissions, Cornell is clearly harder to get into. The gap is not subtle: Cornell evaluates applicants in a far more competitive pool, and strong grades alone that might make someone viable at Penn State often do not make them competitive at Cornell.

Part of the reason is scale and mission. Penn State enrolls a much larger undergraduate class and is designed to serve a wider range of students across its campuses, while Cornell, even though it is also large in some ways, admits students much more selectively into its undergraduate colleges. Cornell applicants also tend to be competing against a denser concentration of top academic profiles, especially from students with very rigorous coursework, high testing when submitted, and strong extracurricular distinction.

Another factor is that Cornell admissions can vary somewhat by undergraduate college, but even looking at the university overall, it is still far more difficult to enter than Penn State overall. Penn State is certainly not automatic, especially for some majors or for University Park, but as a whole it is much more accessible than Cornell.
