Is NYU or Purdue better for engineering?

I'm trying to decide between NYU and Purdue for engineering and keep seeing different opinions depending on what people value most. I know both have strong reputations, but I want to understand which one is generally considered the better choice for engineering overall.

I'm mostly trying to compare them as engineering schools, not just as general universities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Purdue is a long-established, engineering-centered school with broader depth, scale, and recruiting in engineering, while NYU gives you the advantages of New York City and a more urban university experience but is not typically viewed at the same level for engineering overall. If you are comparing them primarily as engineering schools, Purdue is the one most people would consider stronger.

Purdue has one of the most recognized engineering colleges in the country, with extensive offerings across majors, strong lab and design infrastructure, and a campus culture where engineering is a central focus. For a student who wants the classic big engineering school environment, Purdue is much closer to that model than NYU.

NYU Tandon is respected and has grown significantly, especially in areas tied to technology, entrepreneurship, and connections to industry in New York. That can be appealing if you are drawn to startups, internships during the school year, or a more city-based experience. But when people talk specifically about engineering strength overall, breadth of engineering reputation, and national perception among engineering programs, Purdue usually comes out ahead.

So if the question is which is better for engineering overall, Purdue is the clearer answer. NYU can still make sense if you strongly value being in NYC and want engineering in that setting, but on engineering reputation, depth, and overall standing in the field, Purdue has the stronger edge.
