UC Davis vs. Colorado State for veterinary medicine: which is better for pre-vet students?

UC Davis has the edge for a pre-vet student. Its veterinary ecosystem is unusually deep, with a major teaching hospital, and a campus culture where animal science and pre-vet paths are especially visible. For someone who wants the broadest built-in exposure to veterinary medicine during undergrad, Davis offers more in one place.

The biggest differentiator is access. At UC Davis, pre-vet students benefit from being on the same campus as the School of Veterinary Medicine, which creates more natural opportunities to learn from veterinary faculty, attend related events, connect with research, and see multiple animal specialties up close. The animal science program is also especially well developed, and Davis has extensive agriculture and animal facilities that make hands-on experience easier to find.

Colorado State is also excellent, especially because its veterinary school and animal sciences programs are very well respected. But CSU’s main strength for many students is often a slightly more accessible, practical environment rather than the same level of sheer scale and visibility that Davis has in veterinary medicine. If you want a campus where pre-vet feels like one of the defining academic pathways, Davis stands out more clearly.

Cost and personal fit still matter a lot, especially since vet school itself is expensive. But purely on building the strongest overall pre-vet path, UC Davis is the one I’d pick.
