Is UC Davis worth it compared with Arizona State for undergrad?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UC Davis usually gives you a more established academic reputation and a classic UC research-university environment, while Arizona State often gives you more flexibility and a lower net cost for many students. UC Davis is especially well regarded in biological sciences, agriculture, environmental fields, animal science, and several engineering areas, and its college-town setting creates a more self-contained campus experience. ASU is very large, has broad program options, strong honors opportunities through Barrett, and can be financially attractive if you receive scholarships.

In academics, UC Davis tends to carry more prestige nationally, especially within California and for grad school oriented paths. Employers and graduate programs know the UC system well, and Davis benefits from that brand. If you want a school with a strong research identity and a somewhat more selective academic peer environment, Davis often feels like the stronger academic bet.

ASU is not a weak option at all, though. It has major scale, lots of internship-oriented programs, and real strengths in business, engineering, journalism, and some tech-related fields. Barrett Honors College can make ASU feel much smaller and more rigorous, so for a high-achieving student, the academic experience there can be much better than people assume from the university’s overall size and broad admissions profile.

For value, cost changes the answer a lot. If you are a California resident and UC Davis is close in price to ASU, Davis is often worth the premium because of the UC name, academic depth, and alumni network. If you are out of state for Davis and ASU offers strong merit aid, that difference can be hard to justify unless Davis has a clear edge in your intended major.

UC Davis is more worth it when the price is reasonably close or when your interests line up with its standout fields. If ASU comes in much cheaper, especially with Barrett or a strong scholarship package, it can be the smarter undergraduate value.
