UCLA or UC Davis for animal science: which is the better choice for an undergraduate major?

I’m trying to decide between UCLA and UC Davis for animal science, and I’m stuck on which one makes more sense for undergrad. I want a school where the major is actually strong and would help me prepare for work or grad school in animal science.

I know both are good schools, but I’m not sure how they compare specifically for this major.

For animal science specifically, UC Davis is the clearer choice for most students. Davis has one of the most established animal science programs in the country, a dedicated Department of Animal Science, hands-on access to livestock and equine facilities, and very strong ties to veterinary, agricultural, and research work. UCLA is an excellent university overall, but it is not especially known for undergraduate animal science in the same direct, specialized way.

UC Davis makes the most sense for a student who wants animal science to be central to their college experience, not just one academic interest among many. The campus is built around agriculture, biological sciences, veterinary medicine, and applied research, so you are much more likely to find coursework, labs, faculty, internships, and student organizations that connect directly to animal nutrition, physiology, reproduction, management, and welfare. If your goal is vet school, animal-related research, livestock or equine work, or graduate study in animal biology, Davis gives you a more natural pipeline.

UCLA fits a different kind of student. It is a strong option for someone who wants the resources, name recognition, and breadth of a major urban research university and is more interested in broader biology, ecology, neuroscience, or pre-health pathways than in a deeply agriculture-focused animal science environment. If you are drawn to Los Angeles, want more flexibility to explore non-agricultural fields, or are not fully committed to animal science as a career path, UCLA can be appealing. But for this exact major, it is not the place most students choose for specialized undergraduate preparation.

One practical way to think about it is this: at Davis, animal science is a flagship strength of the university. At UCLA, you would be attending a prestigious campus first and then trying to build an animal-focused path within a school better known for other disciplines. For direct preparation in animal science, UC Davis has the stronger academic identity, more relevant infrastructure, and more obvious day-to-day opportunities.
