Georgetown vs Northeastern for international relations: which is better for an IR major?

I’m trying to decide between Georgetown and Northeastern for international relations, and I’m mostly looking at the strength of the program itself. I know both schools have good reputations, but I want to understand which one is generally considered stronger for studying IR and building a career around it.

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, so I’m mainly comparing them based on academics and the opportunities they offer for this field.

For international relations specifically, Georgetown is more widely seen as the standout choice. Its School of Foreign Service is one of the most established and recognizable places in the country for IR-related study, and being in Washington, DC gives students unusually direct access to embassies, think tanks, federal agencies, NGOs, and policy internships during the school year. If your main question is which program carries more weight and depth in IR itself, Georgetown has the stronger reputation and ecosystem.

Georgetown fits the student who wants IR to be the center of their college experience from the start. The curriculum is built around global affairs, foreign policy, political economy, history, languages, and regional study in a way that feels very intentional rather than adjacent. The alumni network in diplomacy, government, international development, and policy is also a major advantage, especially for students who want careers in Washington or internationally oriented public service.

Northeastern makes more sense for a student who likes IR but wants a more professionally flexible, applied path. Its biggest strength is the co-op model, which can give students substantial work experience before graduation, and that can be valuable if you want to connect international affairs with business, law, data, security, or global nonprofit work. Northeastern is respected and can absolutely open doors, but it is not usually the first school people name when talking about top-tier IR programs in the same way Georgetown is.

If you are choosing primarily on the academic strength, reputation, and built-in opportunities of the IR program itself, Georgetown has the clearer edge. Northeastern becomes more compelling when you care a lot about structured experiential learning and want IR combined with a broader career-oriented approach rather than a school whose identity is deeply tied to international affairs.
