Is Pitt worth it compared with Penn State for college?
I’m trying to decide between Pitt and Penn State and keep going back and forth. I know both are solid schools, but I’m wondering how people think about the value of Pitt compared with Penn State overall.
I’m mainly trying to figure out whether Pitt stands out enough to be worth choosing over Penn State for a typical student.

Pitt is worth choosing over Penn State for many typical students, especially if the costs are similar, because it offers strong academics in a major city, easier day-to-day access to internships and hospitals, and a more urban college experience. Pitt’s location in Pittsburgh matters a lot: students are surrounded by major medical centers, research institutions, nonprofits, and companies during the school year, not just in the summer. That can make it easier to build experience early, particularly in health, science, business, public policy, and communications.
Another real difference is the campus environment. Pitt is integrated into Oakland, so students live in a city setting with museums, public transit, nearby neighborhoods, and other colleges all around them. Penn State has a much more traditional big-campus, college-town feel in State College, which many students love, but it is less naturally connected to a large professional hub during the semester.
Academically, both are respected public universities, but Pitt often gets extra attention for pre-med, nursing, public health, biological sciences, and research opportunities tied to UPMC and the university’s medical ecosystem. Penn State has excellent breadth too, especially in engineering, business, agriculture, communications, and alumni reach, so the choice is not about one school being clearly stronger across the board. It is more about where the opportunities are embedded into daily student life.
Value also depends heavily on price. If Penn State is meaningfully cheaper, that can outweigh Pitt’s urban advantages for a typical student, because both schools can lead to strong outcomes. But if the cost is close, Pitt has a pretty compelling edge because its location creates more immediate access to internships, clinical exposure, and city-based experiences without giving up the resources of a major research university.
