Is NYU or Princeton better for math as an undergraduate?

Princeton is usually regarded as the stronger undergraduate choice for pure math. Its math department has an unusually deep reputation, the undergraduate program is tightly connected to a major research culture, and the school is known for producing students who go on to top PhD programs. If you want the place that is most widely seen as elite specifically for undergraduate mathematics, Princeton has the stronger name in that area.

Princeton tends to fit the student who wants an intense, theory-heavy environment and is excited by abstract math for its own sake. The department is famous for rigor, and undergraduates can study with faculty working at a very high level in pure mathematics. The university also puts a lot of emphasis on undergraduate teaching and advising, so even though the department is prestigious, the undergraduate experience is not just an afterthought.

NYU makes more sense for a student who wants excellent math but also values being in New York City, having access to a large university environment, or being close to applied math, finance, data science, and industry connections. Through the Courant Institute, NYU is especially prominent in applied mathematics and closely related quantitative fields. That can be a big advantage if your interests lean toward modeling, computation, or interdisciplinary work rather than only pure theory.

If the question is strictly which school is considered stronger for undergraduate math in the broadest academic sense, Princeton has the edge. NYU is still a very serious option, especially for applied math and students who want the opportunities that come with its location and Courant’s strengths, but Princeton is the one more commonly viewed as the top destination for an undergraduate focused primarily on mathematics itself.
