Notre Dame vs UChicago for political science: which is better for undergrad?

I’m trying to narrow down colleges and I keep seeing Notre Dame and UChicago come up for political science. I’m interested in politics, government, and maybe going to law school later, so I care a lot about the strength of the major and the kind of opportunities students get.

I know both schools are strong overall, but I’m trying to figure out which one is generally considered better for political science as an undergraduate experience.

UChicago has the edge for undergraduate political science. Its political science department has an especially strong academic reputation, the Core and quarter system push students into intensive reading and argument-based classes, and the school’s location gives students direct access to city politics, policy organizations, and research centers.

One big differentiator is the academic style of the major itself. UChicago political science is known for being highly analytical and theory-friendly, which fits students who want serious engagement with political thought, institutions, data, and research methods. For someone considering law school, that kind of training can be valuable because it builds close reading, writing, and argument skills at a very high level.

Another difference is the surrounding ecosystem. Chicago offers more immediate access to internships tied to government, advocacy, urban policy, nonprofits, and public-interest work during the academic year.

Notre Dame is still a very strong option, especially if you want political science in a campus culture that is more traditional, community-oriented, and undergraduate-centered. It also has notable strengths in political theory, constitutional studies, and public service, and its Washington programs can be appealing. But when people compare the two specifically for political science, UChicago is more often viewed as the deeper academic powerhouse in the field.

The main caveat is that UChicago’s intensity is real. If you want a political science experience that feels intellectually demanding, research-driven, and closely tied to policy conversations in a major city, it stands out more clearly here.
