How do Boston University and Tulane compare in social life?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Boston University and Tulane keep coming up. I care a lot about having a social campus where it’s easy to meet people and there is usually something going on.

I’m mostly trying to understand what the day-to-day social atmosphere feels like at each school.

The biggest practical difference is that Tulane has a much more contained, campus-centered social scene, while Boston University’s social life is spread across the city and takes more initiative to tap into. At Tulane, a lot of student life revolves around the residential campus, school traditions, and the New Orleans setting, so it can feel easier to find parties, events, and familiar faces quickly. At BU, there is plenty happening, but the school’s long urban layout and less traditional campus feel can make the day-to-day atmosphere seem more independent and less naturally centralized.

Tulane is often described as socially active and high-energy. Students tend to spend time on and around campus, and New Orleans adds a distinctive weekend culture with festivals, food, music, and off-campus social options that are tightly connected to student life. Because many students stay engaged in the same campus orbit, it can feel easier to build a social routine early.

Boston University is social too, but in a different way. Students meet people through clubs, dorms, classes, and the broader Boston college scene, yet the experience can feel more self-directed. There are lots of events and a huge city around you, but BU does not always have that classic everyone-on-one-campus energy. Some students love that because it feels active and adult, while others find it less immediately warm.

For day-to-day atmosphere, Tulane usually feels more socially cohesive and more obviously lively. BU offers more variety and city access, but you may need to be more intentional about creating your circle. If your priority is a built-in social campus where things feel happening around you all the time, Tulane has the edge.
