Carnegie Mellon vs UCLA for film and media: which is better for a student interested in filmmaking and media studies?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between these schools for film and media. I’m interested in both making films and studying the media side of things, so I want a program that would actually help me build skills and connections.

I know both schools have strong reputations overall, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is the better fit for film and media specifically.

UCLA is the stronger choice for a student focused on filmmaking and media studies. Its location in Los Angeles matters a lot, because you are much closer to internships, production work, alumni in the entertainment industry, and the day-to-day reality of film and television. UCLA also has a more established film ecosystem, with dedicated study in cinema, television, and media scholarship that lines up directly with your interests.

One big differentiator is the academic structure. UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television is built specifically around film, TV, and digital media, so students can study both creative production and critical media analysis in one place. Carnegie Mellon has excellent strengths in the arts, especially in drama, design, technology, and interdisciplinary work, but it is not as singularly centered on the film industry or film studies in the way UCLA is.

The second differentiator is access to industry experience while you are still in school. At UCLA, being in LA makes it much easier to intern during the academic year, attend screenings and panels, meet working professionals, and find student collaborators who are already plugged into entertainment spaces. That kind of proximity can shape your resume and network before graduation, which is especially useful in film and media.

The third differentiator is the kind of student experience you are likely to have. Carnegie Mellon can be very appealing if you want a more experimental path that combines media with technology, performance, design, or interactive storytelling. If your interests lean toward filmmaking plus media studies in a more traditional film-school sense, UCLA has the clearer lane, broader industry adjacency, and stronger built-in opportunities for both craft and connections.
