Is UIUC or Stanford better for software engineering?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out which school would be the stronger choice for software engineering. Both University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Stanford come up a lot when people talk about CS, but I’m not sure how they compare for learning opportunities and career outcomes in this field.

I want to understand which one is generally considered better specifically for software engineering.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and ecosystem: UIUC offers a huge, deeply built-out engineering program with a very strong technical reputation, while Stanford pairs top-tier CS teaching with unusually direct access to Silicon Valley startups, research labs, and recruiting. For software engineering specifically, both schools can get you excellent internships and full-time roles, but the day-to-day experience and network around you will feel quite different. UIUC is known for producing a large number of highly capable engineers through a rigorous, established program, while Stanford benefits from smaller-scale access, high visibility, and proximity to many of the companies shaping the industry.

On pure academic strength in computing, UIUC is absolutely elite. Its computer science and engineering infrastructure is extensive, the course selection is broad, and employers know the program is demanding. If your question is whether UIUC is strong enough to stand next to Stanford for software engineering, the answer is yes.

Stanford, though, is usually the school people would place slightly higher overall for software engineering because of the combination of academics, research access, brand reach, and location. Being near major tech firms and startup networks matters, especially for internships during the school year, founder culture, and informal networking. Stanford also tends to offer more flexibility to explore software engineering alongside entrepreneurship, AI, product work, and interdisciplinary projects.

Career outcomes are excellent from both. A strong UIUC student can absolutely land the same software engineering jobs as a strong Stanford student. The difference is less about whether companies respect the degree and more about how naturally opportunities flow through the campus environment.
