UMass Amherst vs Fordham for internships: which school has better access to opportunities?

I’m trying to decide between UMass Amherst and Fordham, and one of my biggest concerns is getting internships in college. I know location and alumni networks can make a big difference, so I’m trying to understand how each school really compares for internship access and recruiting opportunities.

I’m mostly interested in which one gives students a better path to internships overall.

Fordham gives you the better internship path overall, mainly because of location. Being in New York City, especially with the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan, puts students close to employers in finance, media, nonprofits, law, healthcare, and corporate offices during the school year, not just over the summer. That matters because many internships are part-time and in-person, and Fordham students can realistically access those while classes are in session.

The biggest concrete difference is semester-time opportunity volume. At Fordham, students can commute to internships across Manhattan, the Bronx, and nearby business districts without needing to relocate, which makes it much easier to build experience early and stack multiple internships before senior year. At UMass Amherst, strong students still get internships, but Amherst is in a much more rural setting, so local in-semester options are narrower and many students rely more heavily on summer internships or remote roles.

Employer access also tends to look different. Fordham benefits from regular contact with New York-based employers, alumni events, and career programming tied to industries that recruit heavily in the city. UMass Amherst has solid recruiting and a large alumni network, especially for students in well-developed programs like business, engineering, and computer science, but the day-to-day convenience of being near so many employers is hard to match.

Another practical factor is how easily students can turn one experience into the next. At Fordham, a student might start with a smaller internship during sophomore year and then use those city connections to move into stronger roles junior year. At UMass, that progression can happen too, but it often takes more planning around summers, transportation, and off-campus networking.

UMass Amherst can absolutely deliver strong outcomes, especially for motivated students in high-demand majors, but for raw access to internships across college, Fordham has the clearer edge.
