How does admissions difficulty compare between Notre Dame and Georgia Tech?

Notre Dame and Georgia Tech are both very selective, but for most applicants Georgia Tech is harder to get into, especially if you are applying from out of state and especially for engineering or computer science. Georgia Tech’s applicant pool is heavily self-selected toward strong STEM students. Notre Dame is also difficult, but it evaluates applicants in a somewhat broader way across academic interests rather than being defined so strongly by a few ultra-competitive technical pathways.

One big difference is major sensitivity. At Georgia Tech, the level of difficulty can change a lot depending on what you want to study, with engineering, computing, and other technical programs drawing very intense competition from applicants who often already have high-level math and science preparation. Notre Dame has excellent STEM options too, but admissions there is usually discussed more at the university level than as a race into a few especially crowded majors.

Another differentiator is applicant geography. Georgia Tech gives a clear advantage to in-state students because it is a public university in Georgia, so out-of-state applicants face a steeper bar. Notre Dame, as a private university, does not split applicants in that same public-school way, which makes its selectivity feel more uniform across states.

A third difference is what each school tends to emphasize in the overall file. Notre Dame tends to put substantial weight on academic strength along with character, community engagement, and fit with its mission and campus culture. Georgia Tech certainly reads holistically too, but the academic bar, especially in quantitative preparation, tends to be especially unforgiving because of the school’s technical focus.
