MIT vs Carnegie Mellon for undergraduate research opportunities: which school has more accessible research as an undergrad?

I’m trying to compare MIT and Carnegie Mellon mainly based on how easy it is to get involved in research as an undergraduate. I’m interested in STEM and want a school where undergrads can actually join labs and build experience fairly early.

I know both schools are strong academically, but I’m more focused on the research culture and how open the opportunities tend to be for students who are still early in college.

For undergraduate research access, MIT usually has the edge, especially if you want to get involved early and see research treated as a normal part of student life. Carnegie Mellon absolutely offers serious research too, but it can feel a bit more department-driven and sometimes more dependent on finding the right professor, lab, or program match.

CMU has outstanding labs and many undergrads do meaningful work, but the process can be a little less centralized than MIT’s. In practice, that can mean more initiative is needed to navigate separate departments, research centers, and faculty expectations.
