That can matter a lot for return on investment, especially if you are aiming for internships during the school year rather than only summers.

Ohio State becomes especially attractive when the price is lower through in-state tuition or merit scholarships. It is a huge university with extensive course options, research opportunities, honors programs, and one of the country’s broadest alumni networks. For an average student who is proactive, that scale can translate into a lot of career value because there are so many employers, student organizations, and pathways on campus.

On pure academics, UC Irvine may have a slight edge in overall undergraduate selectivity and in certain STEM-focused areas, but Ohio State is not meaningfully behind in the kinds of opportunities that affect ROI for most students. In practice, return on investment usually comes down to debt, major, and how well you use each school’s resources.

So the better value is usually UC Irvine for California residents paying in-state rates, and Ohio State when it comes in noticeably cheaper through residency or scholarships.
