Which is better for finance careers, UC Irvine or Northeastern?

I’m trying to decide between UC Irvine and Northeastern and I want to focus on finance careers after college. I know both schools have different locations and reputations, but I’m not sure which one tends to give students a better path into banking, investment, or other finance jobs.

I’m mostly looking for a general comparison of how each school stacks up for recruiting and career opportunities in finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is recruiting geography versus built-in work experience. Northeastern gives you unusually strong access to internships during the school year through its co-op system and puts you in Boston, a major finance market. UC Irvine places you in Southern California, where proximity to Los Angeles, Orange County, and nearby wealth management, real estate finance, and corporate finance opportunities can matter, but its finance pipeline is typically less structured than Northeastern’s experiential model.

For finance specifically, Northeastern tends to have the clearer edge in career preparation because employers know the co-op system and students often graduate with more directly relevant resume experience. That matters a lot for competitive finance hiring, where prior internships can be the difference between getting interviews and not getting them. Boston also gives students access to asset management, commercial banking, consulting-adjacent finance roles, and alumni connections during the academic year, not just in the summer.

UC Irvine is still a solid option, especially if you want to work in California long term. The Merage School has a good reputation in business-related fields, and Irvine’s location helps with corporate finance, accounting, commercial real estate, and finance roles tied to Southern California companies. But for front-office investment banking specifically, neither school is a true powerhouse, and UCI usually requires more self-directed networking into LA or other markets.

If your goal is broad finance recruiting with the strongest built-in career engine, Northeastern is the safer bet. If you strongly prefer staying in California and are comfortable being more proactive about networking and internships, UC Irvine can work well, but Northeastern usually offers the more reliable launch into finance careers.
