Is UC Irvine or University of San Francisco better for business majors?

UC Irvine is the stronger pick for most undergraduate business students focused on program depth, recruiting access, and overall name recognition. Its Paul Merage School of Business is part of a large research university, offers a more developed undergraduate business ecosystem, and benefits from proximity to Orange County and Southern California employers in finance, consulting, real estate, and tech-adjacent business roles.

One clear difference is scale and employer reach. UC Irvine draws from a much larger alumni network and tends to have broader on-campus recruiting simply because it is a major public university with strong visibility across California. For internships, being near Irvine, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, and the wider LA market is a real advantage, especially for corporate internships during the school year.

Another differentiator is the structure of the undergraduate business experience. UC Irvine offers a more traditional business-school environment with stronger volume in business coursework, student organizations, case competitions, and peers specifically aiming for business careers. That usually translates into more specialized resources for undergrads who know early that they want business.

USF does have a real advantage in location if you are especially interested in San Francisco itself, including startups, smaller firms, or opportunities built through city-based networking. Its business school can feel more personal and accessible, and some students prefer the smaller private-school setting. But for an undergraduate choosing primarily on business strength and career setup, UC Irvine has the edge.
